CLARKSBURG, W. Va. (WV News) — Lewis County brought a lot of bats to the park with 15 hits for a 13-3 win over Robert C. Byrd in Big 10 Conference baseball action Tuesday night at Staton Field.
The Minutemen (14-3) had five players with two or more hits and four extra-base hits to show a potent offensive attack.
Luke Clem led the way, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, three RBIs and four runs scored from his No. 9 spot in the batting order. Joey Aman went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs and Ryder Aman also went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
Brayden Carder went 2-for-4 with a grand slam for Lewis County and Joel Good also had two hits in the game.
“We have a very solid hitting team,” Lewis County coach Tyler Wood said. “We have a lot of production throughout the lineup and it was nice to see Luke (Clem) in the bottom of the order and Brayden (Carder) in the leadoff spot with that type of hitting prowess.”
The Flying Eagles (9-12) took the early lead with two runs in the first inning against LC starter Trenton Hunt.
Xavier Carvelli singled and moved all the way to third base on an error. Ashton Shaffer walked and both scored on RBI singles by Saverio Destito and Jaxon Maglowski.
“We got the early lead but was unable to keep up with Lewis County,” Robert C. Byrd coach Andrew Smith said. “Lewis County has a really good hitting team and for a lot of the night, it looked like the Fourth of July with the way they were spreading the ball all over the place.
“Xavier (Carvelli) threw strikes and pitched well as did all of our pitchers, we just could not keep up with the way Lewis County hit the ball and we knew that coming in here tonight.”
The Minutemen took the lead for good in the second inning with four runs on three hits and it all came with just one swing of the bat for a 4-2 lead.
Drew Cayton and Clem both walked sandwiched with a Ryder Aman single to load the bases for Carder who hit a long grand slam over the left field fence for Lewis County.
The Minutemen extended the lead to 7-2 with three runs in the fourth inning as Liam Jeffries had a two-run single and Good had a RBI single.
That was more than enough lead for Hunt, who settled down after the first inning to go six solid innings to get the win. He gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out six and walked three.
“Trenton is one of our horses on the mound and we ride him every time he pitches,” Wood said. “We are playing really good baseball and I liked the way we bounced back from a loss to Buckhannon-Upshur.”
Lewis County increased the lead to 11-3 with three runs in the sixth inning as Clem had a two-run double and Joey Aman had a RBI single.
Destito led the Eagles offensive attack going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and added a RBI single in the fifth inning for RCB to score Anthony Corsini.
The Minutemen got their final two runs in the seventh inning as Levi Jones and Clem both had RBI singles.
