WESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — The Lewis County Minutemen saw their week affected significantly by rain.
After beating North Marion, 6-3, on Tuesday, Lewis County led rival Buckhannon-Upshur 7-0 on Thursday before play was suspended by a storm, then were unable to play any of their home contests in the McDonald’s Classic over the weekend.
On Monday, a sixth-inning home run by Luke Clem broke a 3-all tie and earned a 4-3 road win over Philip Barbour.
On the road against the Huskies, Lewis County scored four runs in the top of the sixth to take control of a back-and-forth game.
After North Marion got on the board in the bottom of the first, the Minutemen took the lead in the top of the second: Levi Jones singled with one out, Joel Good was hit by the pitch and Brayden Carder plated both with a double to left field.
North Marion swung it back their way with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
But Liam Jeffries started the Lewis sixth with a single, Ryder Aman walked and Drew Cayton singled to load the bases.
After a force out at the plate, a wild pitch brought Ryder Aman home with the tying run.
With two away, Carder came through in the clutch again, knocking in the go-ahead and insurance runs with a single to center.
Joey Aman then followed with an RBI single to set the final margin.
Joey Aman got the win with six innings of four-hit ball, striking out six, and Trenton Hunt worked a perfect seventh with two strikeouts for the save.
Carder and Joey Aman had two hits each, with Carder driving in four and Joey Aman one, and six other Minutemen added singles.
The Minutemen and Buccaneers got to the bottom of the fifth before play was suspended.
Hunt worked five innings, allowing a hit and a walk.
Joey Aman and Jeffries both had two hits and two RBIs to their credits.
Good, Carder and Hunt also put up two hits.
Lewis County got on the board in the bottom of the first as Carder singled and scored on Joey Aman’s double.
“Our energy was great. We came ready to go in what was a key game for us,” Lewis County coach Tyler Wood said. “From the top to bottom of the order our bats came back alive to back a tremendous pitching performance from Trenton Hunt.”
Hunt and Jeffries then singled to bring Joey Aman around, then a Cayton sacrifice fly brought in Hunt and Good singled in Ryder Aman, who had reached on a fielder’s choice, for the fourth Lewis County run.
In the fourth, Lewis County added its other three runs, all with two outs.
Clem singled, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Joey Aman’s single to left, then Hunt doubled to left and Jeffries stroked an RBI single.
Lewis County had the bases loaded at the time of the stoppage: Jones and Good singled with one out, then Clem walked.
“The game’s start time was moved up once early this morning and then again in the afternoon as the forecast shifted,” Wood said. “In spite of all the uncertainty if we would play or not and if we would finish if we did play, I felt our players were still ready to roll without questions asked.”
Philip Barbour scored in the bottom of the first, but Lewis County tied things in the top of the third as singles by Joey Aman, Hunt and Jones brought in a run.
The Minutemen went up in the top of the fourth as Clem walked, Carder was hit by the pitch and Hunter launched a two-RBI double to left.
PB evened the score in the bottom of the inning, but Clem’s bomb separated the two teams for good.
Hunt struck out nine for the complete-game victory.
Ryder Aman added a triple as part of a two-hit game.
Lewis County (11-2) was home against Elkins on Tuesday and will welcome Clay-Battelle on Thursday at 6 p.m.
