The Lewis County Minutemaids (15-5) took to the field on Monday night against the Braxton County Eagles in an unfamiliar color, wearing the green camo of the WV US Army National Guard. The color suited the hard-hitting ’Maids as they busted out the big guns at the plate, notching 15 hits and plating 18 runs in a four inning victory over the Eagles.
Macey Franklin came in to score the first run of what would be a five-run first for Lewis County, coming home to score on an error. Shortly after Courtney Hartley made it 3-0 with a line drive home run over the center field fence for her fourth home run of 2024.
Lewis County made it 5-0 later in the inning when two runs came into score on another Eagles’ error.
Courtney Boggs smacked her eighth home run of the year, tying her for the Class AA lead in home runs, to open up the scoring in the second. Lewis County picked up six more runs in the inning with a Faith Heater RBI single, another RBI single by Addy Posey, a two-RBI three bagger from Kaelyn Mullins who then scored on a wild pitch, and plated two more on errors by Braxton County to stretch the lead to 12-0 after two innings.
Mullins drove in two more base runners with a single to make it 14-0 after three innings.
Braxton struck back in the top of the fourth with 3 runs to make it 14-3, but the ’Maids put the game away in the bottom half of the inning with the help of a 2-RBI double by Jalen Smith and two more runs off errors to close out the mercy rule win at 18-3.
Ashley Crook got the start and the win in the circle for the ‘Maids, pitching two innings an allowing no runs on two hits while striking out a pair and walking three. Crook was also one-for-one at the plate with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
Mullins, continued her strong Freshman season, and finished with four RBIs in the game. Faith Heater had a three hit, two RBI game, and Makenzie Gregory, Franklin, and Boggs all had two hit nights.
Lewis County will close out the week with three games, a road tilt with Gilmer County on Wednesday, before hosting the North Marion Huskies on Friday night. Then the ‘Maids will face the long drive to Roane County to take on the Red Raiders on Saturday, with playoff seeding on the line.
