Christy Mills has been hired as new director of the Lewis County Senior Center. She will take over after the retirement of longtime Director Dinah Mills on March 31.
The Lewis County Senior Center is kicking off its annual March for Meals campaign, which since 2002 has aimed to highlight partnerships between the community and senior citizens, ensuring they not only receive nutrition in their homes but are not forgotten. The Senior Center serves 130 homebound senior citizens.
The cost to produce, serve, and deliver a meal is $7.35, Senior Center Director Dinah Mills stated. Participants are asked to donate $2.75 towards the cost of each meal, though no one is ever denied service due to lack of ability to pay. The center does rely on donations and other means to make up the cost.
“Federal and state [funding] comprise 65 percent of the budget, and local fundraising and donations make up the other 35 percent,” Mills said.
The center also relies on volunteers to deliver meals, and not just in March but throughout the year.
“The meal runs take two to two and one half hours,” Mills stated in an earlier interview.
Volunteers are always needed, and Mills said pepole can contact Tina Hefner at the center, 304-269-5738, if interested.
“She is the Nutrition Program supervisor. We deliver meals Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday,” Mills said.
Mills has spent 40 years at the center and has officially announced her retirement, with her last day being March 31. Christy Mills has been hired as the new director and has been training under the current director.
Dinah Mills will not sit idle, however. She plans to travel, raise flowers, and volunteer at the Lewis County Senior Center.
Christy Mills has been the head of the center’s In Home Department for the past five years.
Kim Harrison, center assistant director, said: “Working with Christy over the past few years has been great. Christy brings a lot of enthusiasm to our center. I look forward to working with her to meet the needs of Lewis County’s seniors in the days ahead.”
